Dawson Racing D3+Transformers Team Victorious in Inaugural D3esports Cup Championship

Houston, TEXAS, July 28, 2020…After four rounds of qualifying races in the inaugural D3eSports Cup championship series, the Dawson Racing D3+Transformers entry of Ben Whetstone, of Houston, Texas, took home the victory in the D3eSports Cup Grand Final race. The 15-lap competition was a virtual race at the popular Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta circuit, a 2.54-mile, 12-turn road course in the hills of North Georgia.

A fierce competitor in all previous rounds, Brandon Wang, of Glendora, California, driving the white Zotac Gaming entry, captured second place, while Whetstone’s teammate, Pablo Gonzales, also from Houston, in another D3+Transformers car, took home third place.

D3+Transformers Pro-Am driver Nelson Mason, of Niagara Falls, Canada, who came into the D3eSports Cup Grand Final in second place, suffered a DNF after a tight battle with Whetstone. His D3+Transformers Pro-Am teammate, Don Magnusson, of Atlanta, Georgia, achieved fourth place after a strong run throughout the competition.

“We are so proud of Ben for winning the inaugural D3eSports Cup championship series,” said Simon Dawson, VP Marketing, Dawson Racing. “Not only has he been a great competitor but he’s been a good mentor for a lot of the other gamers. And Pablo worked so hard to practice and improve all month so it’s a special reward that he finished on the podium. He has also helped with many of the gaming aspects and deserved some success. Don did a great job and was so consistent throughout the entire championship. I know he really wanted to earn a podium at Road Atlanta because it is his home track in the real world and he’s been racing it on Forza for a long time. And Nelson and Ben had such an intense battle going that it was a shame that Nelson ended up with a DNF. Unfortunately, that’s like real racing though; sometimes you win the battle and sometimes you don’t.

“All in all, the D3eSports Cup championship has been a great competition and we’ve seen some virtual competitors really improve their skills and grow as teammates and gamers. The Forza Motorsport 7 platform is very inclusive for all levels of gamers and that’s helped with diversity. Dawson Racing and the D3+Transformers Team can’t wait to be part of the next D3eSports Cup championship Series #2 in the near future.”
